Disorders associated with iodine intake and thyroid autoimmunity are by far the most common causes. The distribution of hypothyroidism varies according to certain variables such as age, gender, geographic area, and the definition of what is a normal or abnormal value of TSH levels, among others, which makes it difficult to have a unified result of the population frequency of the disease. In Colombia, most of the studies evaluate the frequency of hypothyroidism in specific health conditions or situations, and a few are population-based. The purpose of this review is to describe and analyze the different studies on hypothyroidism carried out to date in Colombia, a region classified as “free” of iodine deficiency.
ER -
