La Prolactina (PRL) es un polipéptido de 198 aminoácidos cuya estructura química no está completamente definida. Su peso molecuar aproximado es de 21.000 datons. En el pasado se la relacionó con la hormona de crecimiento (HGH), por tener ésta intensa actividad lactogénica, pero se sabe que sólo el 16% de la secuencia de prolactina es idéntica a la de H.G.H.
La prolactina fue reconocida por muchos años como una hormona importante en vertebrados inferiores, pero fue sólo en 1971 que se pudo demostrar como una hormona diferent? ?n los primates. Es sintetizada y secretada por células acidófilas específicas de la hipófisis anterior, distinguibles claramente por métodos de inmunofluorescencia de las células acidófilas productoras de HGH. La acción más importante de esta hormona en el humano está en relación con la reproducción.
