Objective: To perform a review of the literature regarding diabetic nephropathy, and to present the most recent evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to prevent the progression of chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients.

Method: A review of the literature was carried out through a bibliographic search in the PubMed database, using the MeSH terms that allowed us to respond to our objective.

Conclusion: Kidney disease is a frequent complication in patients with diabetes. So far, there is no specific form applicable to all patients that allows us to accurately predict who will develop end-stage renal disease. Some factors that precipitate and others that slow the progression of this entity are known, with which there are currently several therapeutic alternatives to decrease the progression of renal deterioration in patients with diabetes.
