Background: the genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a highly prevalent clinical condition, with significant adverse effects on the quality of life of women who suffer from it.

Purpose: To evaluate the quality of life and the clinical characteristics in women with genitourinary syndrome of menopause GSM.

Methodology: randomized cross-sectional study. 235 women aged 40 years or older, postmenopausal, with a diagnosis of GSM were included. Scores from the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) quality of life questionnaire and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) were measured.

Results: Age showed a median of 51 years. In the SF-36 questionnaire, “General Health” obtained the lowest score, followed by “Physical Function”. In the total population, the most frequent symptoms were vaginal dryness and sexual problems. On the MRS scale, the domain most affected was the urogenital with severe intensity. The global score of the MRS scale is classified in the moderate intensity category, but in the group over 60 years of age, the score is higher, translating into a poorer quality of life, at the expense of the urogenital domain.

Conclusions: women with GSM showed deterioration in the quality of life, presenting more severe urogenital and somatic symptoms after 60 years. Studies on the prognosis of this condition in postmenopausal women are necessary.
