Abstract

Context. Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus are considered two of the most frequent endocrine disorders in the world population and therefore in clinical practice. Diabetes and thyroid gland diseases are closely related to each other.

Objective. Determine the prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in different regions of the world through a systematic review of the evidence available today.

Methodology. A systematic review of studies was carried out that estimate the prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions in patients diagnosed with type 2. Diabetes mellitus was carried out according to the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Ítems for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). From 55 initially identified articles, 16% of them correspond to 32% of them, which corresponds to 32% of them. The articles selected mostly were written in English, 25% of these studies were conducted in India (4/16) and the database that contributed the most was PubMed (93%). The selected items were mostly transverse studies, with a sample size that goes from 50 to 1677 participants.

Results. A prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was found with high variability that goes from 8.4% to 48%, with predominance in the female sex, in people over 50 and in those with poor glycemic control.

Conclusions. Thyroid dysfunction represents a group of frequent conditions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus that can have a varied prevalence, identified in different studies that manage to measure gender variables, diagnosis and progression of dysfunction.
