Abstract
SUMMARY
Effect of eight years of salt Iodination on endemic goiter in Panama (1969-1977)
Currently, salt iodination is the safest method used for prophylaxis of endemic goiter; favourable results have been obtained in large sections of world population.
This method was begun in Panama in 1968; now, we tried to establish the degree of current prevalence of endemic goiter in a pilot town.
In such town, frequency of palpable goiter in 1968 was of 94.1% A recent survey carried out in 178 patients (39,5%, of the population) showed that the percentage of palpable or visible goiter, twice normal size, had fallen to 24,7% present in patients belonging to third decade of life or older.
T3 and T4 levels are similar to the normals found in the city of Panama.Three subjects had clinical and laboratory evidence of hyperthyroidism. A trend to node formation and predominance in females was found. Abscence of microsomal antibodies and lymphocytic infiltration in surgical specimens rules out a concomitant chronic thyroiditis.
