Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency is considered a public health problem. Some studies have found vitamin D deficiency in at-risk populations (elderly, postmenopausal ages) but there are few data on young adult population and even less information in Latin American populations. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 205 university students, between 18 and 45 years in 2 Colombian cities to establish the prevalence and vitamin D deficiency associated factors. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25-hydroxyvitamin-D levels less than 20 ng/mL. A prevalence of vitamin D deficiency of 22.4 % (95 % CI 17-29) was established. It was found that male gender and Fitzpatrick IV phototype were independently associated with increased risk of vitamin D deficiency; while regular fish consumption and sun exposure of lower limbs during exercise decreased the risk of vitamin D deficiency
