Resumen

  1. Aún cuando existe mutua dependencia humoral (servomecanismo) entre hipófisis y tiroides, la capacidad de respuesta hipofisaria se halla presumiblemente regulada por el hipotálamo a través de un mediador humoral través de un mediador humoral de tipo nervioso o endocrino, de naturaleza no bien establecida hasta el presente.
  2. La hipófisis segrega una hormona tiroestimulante cuyo efecto principal es la aceleración del metabolismo de yodo por la glándula y que secundariamente produce aumento morfológico. La hormona es una glicoproteina caracterizable química (?) e inmunológicamente y dosificable por métodos biológicos. Estos últimos han permitido la identificación de un factor tiroestimulante "anormal" o "retardado" « en algunos casos de enfermedad de Basedow-Graves. El posible papel de la TSH, normal o anormal, en la etiología del hipertiroidismo, está todavía por aclararse.
