Abstract

The international Euromonitor compares Colombia's rapid population aging with that of South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia and forces us to understand that the aging rate in our country tripled in just 6 decades, while it took France 115 years for its over-65 age group to grow from 7% to 14% of its total population. Colombia will have that growth in only 20 years.

Now, statistics show an unexpected longevity that poses us the challenge of humanized and differential care, not only of the majority of people who are aging in good conditions, but also the challenge of achieving a better understanding, approach, research and specialized care of chronic disease as a result of the functional decline of the B cell, as occurs in type 2 diabetes mellitus, and its interaction with the so-called geriatric syndromes. Today Colombia has more than 23,200 people over 100 years of age and this is a figure that will grow exponentially in the following decades, with the particularity that more than half of the centenarians are and will be women.
