Es conocido que la Ocitocina, junto con la vasopresina se sintetiza, almacena y secreta en el área hipotalámica y lóbulo posterior de la hipófisis. Químicamente es un octapéptido con idéntica estructura en todas las especies de mamíferos estudiados hasta ahora, diferenciándose de las vasopresinas naturales tan sólo en los asopioácidos de las posiciones 3 y 8. La única acción fisiológica que se la ha demostrado es la eyección láctea, la cual cobra importancia durante la fase puerperal.
