Abstract

Background: Hungry bone syndrome is an entity characterized by a severe and prolonged drop in serum calcium concentrations, which appears postparathyroidectomy in patients with hyperparathyroidism.

Purpose: Review updated evidence on available strategies to prevent the onset of hungry bone syndrome

Methodology: The search was conducted in specialized databases, including MEDLINE/Pubmed, EMBASE, and LILACS. For grey literature, Google Scholar was adopted as the search engine. The MeSH terms used were: Hungry Bone Syndrome, Hypocalcemia, Parathyroidectomy, Hyperparathyroidism, Bisphosphonates, Vitamin D. These keywords were combined using Boolean operators with the objective of optimizing the search for relevant studies. Additionally, reference lists of selected articles were manually searched to identify additional studies of interest.

Results: There is still little evidence available on the strategies that could be implemented to reduce the risk of the appearance of hungry bone syndrome, however, bisphosphonates seem to be effective in reducing the incidence.

Conclusions: Due to the limited number of published evidence, it is not possible to have guidelines regarding the prevention that should be given to hungry bone syndrome, so prospective randomized studies are needed to resolve this question.
